چکیده

Vertebral Artery Occlusion Following Hyperextension and Rotation of the Head • This is a case report of a lateral medullary syndrome of Wallenberg following occlusion of one vertebral artery and stenosis of the opposite artery precipitated by combined motion of hyperextension, rotation, and lateral flexion of the head within physiological limits. Sufficient duration of such head position appeared to initiate thrombus formation following stenosis or occlusion of the vertebral artery at the level of the atlanto-occipital joint. Propagation of this thrombus obstructed the posterior inferior cerebellar artery causing infarction of the lateral medullary region. The pathogenesis of this mechanism is discussed. Additional

Cerebral hemodynamic changes induced by simulated tracheal intubation: a possible role in perioperative stroke? Magnetic resonance angiography and flow analysis in 160 cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Perioperative stroke is a rare complication of generalized surgery (1% to 6%). Unexpected difficulties with tracheal intubation (TI), as well as the hyperextended position, may predispose a patient to or play a role in stroke. We sought to identify blood flow changes in carotid and vertebral arterial circulation during simulated TI and develop profile models for stroke ri...

An Unusual Cause of Vertebral Artery Dissection: Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

Brain-supplying arterial dissection is considered one of the most common vascular causes of stroke in younger patients. Dissections are usually preceded by trauma or mechanical stress; the vascular stressor may be trivial as this condition has been described in association with manipulation and stretching the neck. Here we describe a case of vertebral artery dissection and stroke following esop...

Carotid angioplasty and stenting in a patient with high grade stenosis of Internal Carotid Artery associated with both vertebral arteries and contralateral carotid occlusion

Severe internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis is a common cause of cerebrovascular accident (CVA) in middle-aged patients. Contralateral carotid occlusion (CCO) in patients with severe ICA stenosis is associated with high risk of CVA. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is associated with more complications in patients with CCO than those without CCO. In this study, we present the case of a 61-year-ol...

Hyperextension of Neck: An Uncommon Presentation of Dissecting Aneurysm of the Intracranial Vertebral Artery

Dissecting intracranial vertebral artery aneurysm is a rare entity in clinical practice. Involvement of posterior circulation at the level of the foramen magnum even rarer.Vertebral artery aneurysm is usually presented with headache, neck pain and vertigo with vomiting. Here we are describing a rare case with uncommon presentation.
